Since its creation in 1938, Laguardia had earned a reputation within Riberia and the UFSR to build robust and economic diesel engines first, and after taking control of Sorca (Riberia’s national automaker before the Sapan War) in 1946, earned a reputation for reliable and cheap trucks and commercial vehicles. In 1949 however, Laguardia decided to put their badge into a passenger car (passenger cars were produced under the Sorca brand). Since then, Laguardias were considered a step above the popular Sorcas, more refined but outdated in technological terms. With the arrival of the much more advanced Lambdas, Laguardia feared for their market share and started investing into newer techniques. Although the investments required were far too big for a small automaker like Laguardia that is why the Riberican Government decided subsidize for the automaker, which included a loan to build a new factory in Illibesia. This was key for Laguardia in the future, and allowed them to become a benchmark for automotive technology. It is ironic that the Government subsidized Laguardia when it was the Government that owned Lambda, Laguardia’s main rival in the national market. However, the Minister of Industry of Riberia believed that to improve the Riberican industry, both companies should have equal opportunities. The Lizana Serie 1 was the first product developed thanks to these funds, and the improvements from previous Laguardias were noticeable: the Lizana was a monocoque, dropping the step ladder chassis. It also featured front and rear independent double wishbone suspension and an all new series of Inline 5 engines, along two Inline 4 diesels. The Lizana was a complete success, and was way ahead of its day in 1966. As previous Laguardias, it was considered a premium product, and it was favoured by the middle-upper class, especially in Automatic transmission (during the late 60’s and early 70’s, there was a trend in Riberia for automatic cars). It was also the first Laguardia to be exported outside the COPASU with considerable success: Azaria and Denland favoured the Lizana, especially because of their silent and refined diesel engines. The Lizana Serie I was produced from 1966 to 1972, being replaced by the Lizana Serie II, which was a heavily rebodied Serie I. It was available in Normal, Especial, and Deluxe trim levels, and in 2, 2.3 and 2.7 litres Inline 5s and 1.8 and 2.3 diesel engines.
